Thursday, May 23, 2013: CJS BLUE JAYS NIGHT at the Toronto Blue Jays vs. Baltimore Orioles game

He can hustle. He can bunt. He can turn a double play. He has fitted in with his team-mates and fans chant his name. He smiles, he laughs, he does leg-bends and head-stands, and - oh yeah - did we mention that he can dance?

MUNENORI KAWASAKI (川崎宗則) is the first Japanese position player to play with the Toronto Blue Jays. Called up to replace the injured shortstop Jose Reyes, in the short time he's been here, he's given the team a shot of energy and made a huge impression on team-mates and fans alike. Team-mates bow to him. Fans have bought his jersey and had t-shirts made. Superstar Ichiro Suzuki even said that Kawasaki was so popular at Toronto games that "I thought he handed out free pizza to the crowd or something.

Yes, the "Kawasaki Kraze" is sweeping the crowd - krowd? - at Blue Jays games and you too can get in on the fun!!

Thursday, May 2, 2013: CJS May Ichimoku-kai (IMK)

Is spring finally here? Yes! So why not come celebrate at Canada-Japan Society’s ICHIMOKU-KAI on Thursday, May 2nd. Everyone is invited to join us for a great evening of cultural exchange, tasty Japanese food and drinks, door prizes, and lots of fun!

Ichimoku-kai (IMK) literally means the “first Thursday meeting” and since 1995 it has been the Canada-Japan Society’s signature monthly social event, naturally taking place on the first Thursday of every month.  It is a great place to informally network, make new and interesting friends, practise your Japanese or English, and – most of all – have a good time!  Usually, half the attendees are Japanese and half are Canadian, all with an interest in or connection to Japan.  Attendees receive special food and drink discounts and have the chance to win some exciting door prizes.

BONUS THIS MONTH: CJS is planning a fabulous BLUE JAYS event in May, and to buy your tickets for that you'll want to come to IMK! Tickets will be sold at IMK on a first-come, first-served basis. Click here for more details about CJS BLUE JAYS NIGHT.

We hope to see you there - and come early for a good seat!

"Sakoolah" Community Cherry Blossom Picnic in High Park - Tentatively April 28, 2013 @ 12 noon in High Park

What better way to celebrate the return of spring than with a picnic under blossoming cherry trees?  And yes, here in Toronto's magnificent High Park, you can do exactly that! トロントで花見しましょう!

With the support of CJS, Japanada, JAVA and the Toronto Kimono club, our friends at JETAA and JCSA are hosting "Sakoolah", a free "hanami" community picnic in support of friendship, cultural exchange, nature, and beauty.

The picnic is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, April 28 from 12:00 noon but may need to be postponed by a few days due to weather or cherry blossom conditions. Updates will be posted at www.facebook.com/Sakoolah, so please check that site for the latest information.
